“Love, as everyone knows, may transform even the most trivial aspects of a person’s life.”
Love is the cornerstone of humanity—nothing seems to be genuinely more magical than the ability to love and the capacity to be loved. However, in the hazy whirlwind of warmth and our haste to transform the world into an overflowing chalice of tenderness, loving oneself should take precedence. To see the value of realizing one’s worth, senior high school guidance counselor, Mr. Evardone, imparts his wisdom regarding the concept of self-love and the importance of prioritizing one’s well-being.
1. How should one “balance” self-love in their life?
I believe that a sense of balance is essential for a life well-lived in general. To me, keeping balance means constantly being aware of what is essential right now and making time for it. Our time and attention are divided among many competing priorities. Occasionally, we have to prioritize our families above all else, and at other times, we have to put our social life on hold to meet the demands of our commitments or academic pursuits. There are also moments when we need to prioritize our own well-being and take a break to refuel. Self-love, in my opinion, requires a constant reevaluation of priorities, and the only way to achieve this balance is to make time for what matters most at any given time. All that’s necessary is for one to have a deep understanding and appreciation of them.
2. Do you believe love for oneself changes someone? Why or why not?
Love, as everyone knows, may transform even the most trivial aspects of a person’s life. When you find the love of your life, the world opens up in a more beautiful way. I believe the same is true when one falls in love with self.
3. What lessons do you wish to impart to Ateneo Hearters on self-love?
It’s easy to neglect one’s own needs when one is under so much pressure to be the ideal friend to others. The ability to accept, respect, and most importantly, love oneself is the cornerstone of being that friend. Charity, as the proverb goes, should start at home, and there’s no reason not to start with yourself.
4. Define self-love in 3 words.
I am important!
